8Apr2008 Author: Mother Jones, RNWith fewer new nurses entering the profession, the average age of the RN is climbing. According to the 2004 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses released in February 2007 by the federal Division of Nursing, the average age of the RN population in March 2004 was 46.8 years of age, up from 45.2 in 2000. That means that menopausal women dominate the nursing profession. Remember, we’re grumpy, so you should always be nice to your nurse. I love Dr. Seuss. Here’s an email that I received from my mother. The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends. I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time. What do you get at the end of it? A Death! What’s that, a bonus?
I think the life cycle is all backwards. You should die first, get it out of the way. Then you live in an old age home. You get kicked out when you’re too young, you get a gold watch, you go to work. You work forty years until you’re young enough to enjoy your retirement. You do drugs, alcohol, you party, you get ready for high school. You go to grade school, you become a kid, you play, you have no responsibilities, you become a little baby, you go back into the womb, you spend your last nine months floating……and you finish off as an orgasm. Oh dear! I am well past the average age but still too young to retire. Oh, and menopausal women scare the c**p out of me but the Dr Seuss cartoon says it all.

At 42 I am the new kid on the block, I started nursing as a second profession. I have to say, though, that for the majority of the women I work with I am almost old enough to be their father. All these “kids” have their issues, too. It’s either raging hormones or a lack thereof.
