Sanity is madness put to good use. - George Santayana
I remember when doctors smoked at the nurses station. You can tell that this commercial is really old because it’s in black and white, and because the nurse who comes sashaying through the doctor’s office is wearing her nurses cap. She looks happy and calm as she hands the doctor his papers. Enjoy this little gem that came out before the Surgeon General’s warning about smoking.
There has been a lot of chatter in the blogosphere about medical bloggers and HIPPA regulations so let me make this very clear: I write composite stories about many different people that I've cared for over the years.

Different world, different times. I remember when I was a kid with severe asthma, going to my doctor’s office (a specialist in allergy and asthma) where the doctor would come into the examining room smoking a pipe. I’m sure he quit shortly after I started going there, of course. But to this day I associate the smell of pipe smoke with breathing easier. The irony.

What Do You Smoke, Doctor?…
More doctors smoke camels than any other cigarette….

Unimaginable in this day and age. How times change! I remember a time when we let patients smoke in their room (on ward with heart and lung patients), and where our vascular surgeon was the worse chain smoker I ever knew. He was quite annoyed when he could not smoke in the hospital anymore.

Oh my gosh that brought back memories. I can remember when doctor’s smoked in the nursing station, patient’s in they’re rooms, and nurses in the report room. I used to go around trying to do my job choking with tears streaming down my face. I was so happy when they outlawed smoking in the hospital but a few of the old Docs went right on doing it. Those were the days when Docs had the power to do stuff like that.
