Sanity is madness put to good use. – George Santayana
Check out Dr. Memsahib hitting on his colleague, Dr. Ruth Stafford. Dr. Stafford looks star struck, or else she’s been on call too many hours in a row. It’s hard to tell what’s going on. She looks like she’s in some sort of hypnotic state. Maybe she’s going into culture shock. Sometimes it’s really hard adjusting to someone else’s customs.
I’m not saying that people from different cultures can’t get along with each other, but there are some men who can’t handle being around strong, independent American women. You know what I mean. I’ve worked with some doctors who act like I just gave them a wedgie when I make a suggestion about patient care, or question one of their orders. Sometimes they get dramatic and start screaming at the nurses station just because, God forbid, a woman had the audacity to be born with a brain. One day one of my nursing colleagues approached a doctor about one of his orders. He had forgotten to sign it, and being good-natured, she teased him, saying, “I guess I’m going to have to work a little harder to train you on how to sign off on your orders.” He glared at her. The veins on the side of his head popped out as he clinched his teeth. He finally replied, “Wives from my country don’t train their husbands.” I couldn’t keep my mouth shut. I said, “That’s OK. If you’re wife won’t train you, we will.”
It’s a good thing that I married a local boy. Someone like Dr. Memsahib would have never asked me out.

I love it…our Dr. Memsahib got booted, since he had the same problem dealing with both female nurses and doctors.

Personally I think she’s just shocked that he’s trying to show her how big his stethoscope is….

Oh Daniel, don’t spit on Mother Jones. I still have fond memories of submitting something I wrote on geopolitics signed “LCDR Swofford” thinking nothing of it. As it circulated, a professor who read it keep referring to me as “he” throughout his rebuttal and critique of my thoughts . It never occured to him that a LCDR in the Navy is not gender specific. smile

Great story! And yes, I think we have all met at least one doctor like that.

I continue to be a ardent admirer of your work, oh fellow blogger.

Daniel,
It applies to all women – regardless of marital or ethnic status.
Mother Jones,
I come from that part of the world myself. But my Momma didn’t raise uncouth children – you give every one a fair shake and treat ‘em with respect unless their behavior warrants other wise.
“He who doesn’t respect women, doesn’t respect his Mother. And he who doesn’t respect his Mother, isn’t fit to be called a man”.
But you need not travel to that part of the world to experience sexism – it’s alive and well today even here in the USA.
Socially Conservative societies tend to be more patriarchal. But we’re all making progress, aren’t we?
cheers,
Kelly

Heard so loud and clear! I’m glad you put that jerk in his place. I can’t stand it when people from other countries think it’s okay to impose their customs on us, and it’s no better the other way around.
That being said, his comments were completely unprofessional, disrespectful, and impolite by *any* standard. Having worked in several countries, I feel pretty confident in saying I won’t let nationality, religion or ethnicity serve as an excuse for failing to treat me with the respect due a medical professional.
