Sanity is madness put to good use. – George Santayana
Yes, I know the title of this post is sexist. So sue me. And by the way, I’m not leaving out the guys. Male nurses rock, too! Nursing sure has changed over the last one hundred years. Yeah Baby, we’ve come a long way. Check out this nursing uniform. Can you believe that turn-of-the-century nurses like this one use to wear uniforms like this to work? Imagine trying to give patient care while wearing a high starched collar, a long skirt, and long white sleeves. I bet you anything that this nurse spent hours washing and ironing her uniform before she got dressed for work. I also bet you that her uniform was soiled within five minutes of arriving onto the unit. Thank goodness for the advent of scrubs.

Nursing uniforms have gone through a lot of changes throughout the years. Have you ever wondered what they’re going to look like in the future? Here’s your chance to let your imagination run wild. ScrubsGallery.com, a proud sponsor of Nurse Ratched’s Place is running a contest. All you have to do is write a post that is 500 words or less about what nursing uniforms are going to look like in the future and put the post up on your blog. If you don’t have a blog, don’t worry; I’ll put your post up at Nurse Ratched’s Place. First prize is a $100 gift card from ScrubsGallery.com, and the runner up gets a free scrub top for work. Start writing you posts now! Send your submissions to motherjonesrn AT yahoo DOT com. Deadline for entry is October 10, 2009. Winners will be announced on October 29, 2009 at Change of Shift. Click here for official contest rules. And while you’re looking over the contest rules, check out what today’s uniforms look like at ScrubsGallery.com. I’m sure that every turn-of-the-century nurse would have appreciated ScrubsGallery.com.

It’s the long sleeves that gross me out the most, haha
I can’t imagine how often they did or should have changed their shirts on a daily basis back then.

Heck, I wore a uniform exactly like this at nursing school–minus the long sleeves and dog collar– in 1977, and didn’t realize the style was that old! We called it our “bibs and aprons” and it took 20 minutes, 6 cufflinks and 2 people to get into on the mornings before clinical. Luckily, the hospital laundered the things for us. The patients loved our throwback stiff, starched outfits which rustled loudly whenever we moved, because they alway could tell “when the nurse was coming”.
