OH my goodness...I can't imagine what it would have been like nursing back then. I work with some of those nurses who did their training in hospital and stayed on residence and worked for pitance.

As for the uniform...when I was working on my degree I did an assignment on the uniformed and I titled it "do the clothes really matter" Like you...I wonder how much I would have accomplished if I had to wear those gowns...however...when I did start nursing I did wear the white nursing dress, stocking and shoes....now I just wear scrubs...but that is part of the whole infections control thing....I never wore a cap....just couldn't imagine trying to keep it clean.....

I laughed when reading the section on serving food to invalids in dainty dishes. I worked at one hospital in neuro ICU and we constantly had parties for our C-spine injuries. We kept them an average of two months and were very attached to them and their families. We mixed up punch in (new) urinals and iced it down. They make decent pitchers. So much for dainty dishes. Good times had by all!

*My three hundred dollar Christmas spread will be served on fancy, sturdy holiday-themed paper plates. Anyone who carps about it, can eat elsewhere! wink

Fun post, Mother Jones.
