Sanity is madness put to good use. – George Santayana

It’s that time of year again and nothing says Christmas like a mob fighting over television sets on Black Friday. Admit it. Were you one of those people who got in line before midnight on Thanksgiving in order to get a door buster deal? I couldn’t believe the throng of humanity out on the streets when I was driving to work this morning at 5AM. And now I just heard a story on the news about a woman who kept other shoppers away from merchandise by spraying them with pepper spray. What’s going on here? I think Andy Borowitz summed it up best: “Egyptians risk their lives for new government. Americans bravely do the same for new flat screens”

Thankfully, I did NOT participate in the Black Friday Madness (although – living dangerously close to a Shopping Maul – err Mall – means I now need to add 20 minutes to my commute, just to get through the last 2 blocks leading towards home).
The closest I came to “participating” was buying my entire Winter Wardrobe, online, for just over $100.00 (Everything on “Clearance” + 30% off + Free Shipping!). Think I’ll be purging some Summer-Wear and making a trek to the Goodwill very soon.
Happy Holidays!

Thanks for the Andy Borowitz quote. Hubby and I have decided that our bad moods were a direct result of too much cable news, faux celebs behaving badly (and coverage like it was real news) and unsolicited opinions from everywhere on everything. Resulting feelings of helplessness just had to be shunted aside. We have decided to “Act Locally” just do some things close to home…. Clean a neighbors sidewalk of snow, donate nursing time and $ to a free clinic, volunteer at the neighborhood library… Donating food and Clothing to our church pantry. No shopping mania ever again.

These “things” they fight for on Black Friday will not satisfy the need they are trying to meet. Their downward spiral will continue with their empty technology mocking them. “Things” do not make anyone whole. But reaching out to others comes pretty darn close…but I don’t mean reaching out a hand with a pepper spray canister in it.
